After reading 50 ways to use
Wikis for a more Collaborative classroom. I realized the versatility of
Wikis across the curriculum. With Wiki you can create presentation, graphical or concept map, glossary and the list goes on. What I have finally realized is that you can track the progress of the students' work both as a collaborative group or individually. Confidentiality of how each child participation is under the watchful eyes of the teacher.
Like you, Viji, after reading the web post by Lucian Duma(2010), I was excited about the almost limitless possibilities of wiki use for greater interactive and collaborative learning among students, and the opportunities it provides for teachers to scaffold and monitor their students' progress. The wiki is also remarkable for its potential to cater to different learning styles, since visuals and multi-media can be incorporated. As such, learning to read and write can be a happy and creative adventure, especially for struggling readers who need to be stimulated in more innovative ways.
ReplyDeleteFurthermore, the article points out that through wikis, students can reach out to the wider community. This is because a teacher and his/her students can agree to share work produced on wikis with individuals and groups outside of the school (once there is a valid or positive reason for doing so). This means that parents and others in the community can get more involved in the students' literacy development. For example, if after reading a class wiki, a member of the business community becomes sensitized to certain issues at the school, he/she might be moved to provide financial support for literacy enhancing initiatives at the institution. Aren't wikis wonderful?
